Brussels Lymphedema Fellowship – Grant Awardee 2025 : Dr. Daniel Bassem

A lot of cancer survivors suffer from lymphedema , a debilitating disease, that arises from the interruption of the small and transparent lymphatic pathways during the successful cancer treatment. Its manamgement is commonly limited to conservative management with massages, compression garments and skin care, mainly due to the microscopic scale of the lymphatic system. However, the last decade of supermicrosurgical, robotic Plastic Surgery innovation has changed the landscape.

The department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the Brussels University Hospital is pioneering the new era in this field. It is therefore for me a great honor to be awarded the Robotic Lymphedema Fellowship at Brussels University Hospital under the distinguished supervision of Prof. Alex Nistor and Prof. Moustapha Hamdi.

Utilizing the most modern robotic equipment and knowledge in the world, I aim to master high-tech surgical innovations that allows for the precision required in robotic rmicrosurgery. This fellowship is a defining step in my career as a specialzed microsurgeon, allowing me to bring world-class robotic microsurgery expertise back to my practice and provide life-changing outcomes for lymphedema patients.
